Television writers have a lot of responsibility on their hands when they write coming out scenes for their LGBTQ+ characters. These kind of scenes aren’t just for entertainment and have a genuine impact on the lives of those being represented. We take inspiration from what we watch and often use it in our own lives. When we relate to a story or a character, we consider the possibility of the events we watch unfold in our own lives.
Thankfully, a lot of shows get it right and deserve to be celebrated for it. Here’s 7 of the best coming out scenes on TV.
1. Alex Danvers (Supergirl)
Alex’s coming out arc on Supergirl was one of the best I’ve seen on TV. This scene hit the hearts of so many who related to every single word that stumbled out of her mouth. From the inability to make eye contact, to the emotion in her voice and the way every word lands; Chyler Leigh’s performance is nothing short of exceptional.
2. Santana Lopez (Glee)
As heartbreaking as it is, the power that this scene holds is heavy. A lot of people are lucky with the reactions of the people they tell, but it’s not perfect for everybody.
3. Lito Rodriguez (Sense8)
Although it’s not technically a coming out scene, it basically is as it’s the first time Lito speaks to his mother after he’s outed. Sense8 does everything right here. At first it’s unsure what direction will be taken, but as it becomes clear we see Lito’s innocence as he gets the acceptance he’s always been afraid of not receiving. It also ends on a light-hearted note which is a nice change for scenes like this.
4. Emily Fields (Pretty Little Liars)
Watching Emily’s coming out story was really quite painful because regardless of those close to her that did accept her, seeing her mother be so unsupportive is all you could focus on. This was a hugely important story to have on a family network at the time and would have started a lot of conversations that may not have otherwise begun.
5. Ellen Morgan (Ellen)
The impact of this scene goes without saying. Airing in 1997, it received a high amount of criticism and was cancelled as a result. Today, it’s seen as a pivotal point in TV for the LGBTQ+ community and who knows what would have happened without it.
6. Kurt Hummel (Glee)
Acceptance is everything and this scene from Glee shows in the most simplest way how it’s done.
7. Elena Alvarez (One Day At A Time)
One Day At A Time gave us another one of the best coming out scenes on TV with Elena’s story. You can always tell when the people involved have put care and consideration into the story they’re telling and this is one of those.
It’s been an emotional journey reliving some of these coming out scenes, but to date all of these characters are living a happy life full of love which is inspiring to know.
