We all know that the Game of Thrones finale couldn’t have given us everything, but that doesn’t stop us from wishing for more does it? Perhaps if they’d have had longer, more questions would have been answered. But, here we are at the end of the wintery road.
I know there’s so much that we were all desperate to see in the Game of Thrones finale. Here’s 5 that would have made the last episode even more epic.
A CERSEI AND DAENERYS SHOW DOWN
Game of Thrones has built up this rivalry for so long that their final showdown seemed a given. However, they only confronted each other on two occasions and never got a moment alone. What would that confrontation have looked like without all the theatrics? No dragons, no armies, no protectors, just two people on opposite sides of a war.
When you have two actors like Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke, it almost seems a waste not to put them in the same room alone.
The revelation that Jon wasn’t actually a bastard and was in fact a Targaryen (with the biggest claim to the throne) was huge. But what came of it? Sure, it created some tension with him and Daenerys and allowed us to see him ride a dragon, but that appears to be the extent of it.
It felt strange that his claim to the throne wasn’t addressed more in the final episode. When Jon killed Daenerys and Tyrion gave his speech about who should rule, why was Jon not mentioned? Tyrion had made so many points about how Jon was the rightful heir and would be the best ruler. To go from that to nominating Bran seemed rather random.
If the final season of Game of Thrones needed more of one thing, it was Yara Greyjoy. I would have loved to see her and the ironborn make an appearance at The Battle of Winterfell, but apparently she had “islands to claim”. They could have utilised her character far more than they did; for instance having her react to Theon’s death and having her kill Euron.
I’m thankful that our gay ruler made one final appearance, but sadly it was not enough to fulfil me or her army of lesbians.
JON VS GREY WORM
There were a few moments in Season 8 where I could really feel things heating up between Jon and Grey Worm. There was one in episode 5 where the two had a glare-off that screamed “I want to kill you” and another in episode 6 when Jon grabbed his arm. When he then killed Daenerys, it then seemed strange that Grey Worm didn’t immediately kill him regardless of what anyone told him to do.
He was the most loyal to his Queen and would have done anything to protect her and thus surely avenge her. Obviously the writers wanted to keep Jon alive, but a confrontation between these two felt like it was missing.
There have been a few prophecies throughout Game of Thrones. A few were undelivered or left unanswered. Two of the key ones were:
- In season 5, we see a young Cersei encounter a witch and demand for her future to be told. She’s told she will be Queen for a time, until a younger and more beautiful one comes along. She’s then told that she will have 3 children who will all die. Both of these things come true, however the remaining part to her prophecy doesn’t. This is that “the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you”. The interpretation of this is that her “little brother” will choke her. It seems odd to follow two thirds of the prophecy and not have it fulfilled, especially if Cersei was to die anyway. Having her killed by Tyrion or Jaime would have been a much better ending.
- Azor Ahai and the Prince That Was Promised is another prophecy that we never got a true answer for. This prophecy foretold that the figure in the Lord of Light, Azor Ahai, would be reborn as The Prince That Was Promised. The name was not mentioned in the series, but TPTWP was by Melisandre when she resurrected Jon Snow. Whilst many do believe that the conclusion is that it was Jon after he killed Daenerys, other fans feel it remains unanswered. When Arya killed the Night King, many believed it to be her. The writers missed another beat her by not mentioning it, as that would have made a lot of fans happy.
I suppose all we can do now is theorise and picture what could have been. Overall the Game of Thrones finale gave us perhaps the happiest ending we could have wished for…unless you’re a Cersei or Daenerys fan that is.
If the first two episodes had have been condensed and they hadn’t focussed so much into the battle, perhaps more of the story could have been told.
