Over the past 13 seasons, Grey’s Anatomy has had its fair share of iconic and memorable moments. Whilst some are satisfying to reminisce on, others are unbearable to think of.
If you’re up for experiencing some of that heartache and joy all over again, here are 16 scenes that left their mark on me.
SPOILER ALERT FOR ANYONE WHO ISN’T CAUGHT UP.
1. Jackson and April elope
“I don’t wanna just date, April. I want the whole damn thing”.
The hiatus between 10×12 and 10×13 was agonising to say the least, but it was definitely worth the wait. When I first saw Jackson and April running out of the barn together hand in hand, I could never have expected the episode to end the way it did.
2. “I’m free”
I was never a fan of Cristina and Burke’s relationship, so when he walked out on the wedding I wasn’t feeling overly emotional.
But then the final scene happened.
Hearing Cristina utter the words “I’m free” was so powerful to hear, and watching Meredith cut her out of her wedding dress whilst Ingrid Michaelson’s ‘Keep Breathing’ played made it even more impactful.
3. George and Izzie’s elevator scene
Nope, not the elevator scene where they awkwardly kiss, this one.
Watching this scene for the first time broke me. George was the first series regular to die on Grey’s Anatomy, which probably made it one of the most shocking deaths for me. The vision of George and Izzie meeting in the elevator as they’re both crashing, George in his army suit and Izzie in her prom dress, will always be hard-hitting.
4. Arizona proposes to Callie
“I asked her to marry me and a truck came out of nowhere”
In true Grey’s fashion, what should have been a moment of joy quickly turned into utter heartbreak.
5. The Story
Sara Ramirez singing. Does anything else need to be said?
Love or hate the musical episode (I personally loved it), there’s no denying that getting to hear Sara Ramirez sing made the whole thing worth it.
6. How to Save a Life
Staying on top of the musical episode, I can’t not include the performance of ‘How to Save a Life’ on this list.
7. Alex and Izzie’s Wedding
Even though I’m a Jolex fan now, I’ll always have a soft spot for Izzie and Alex. When he walked into her hospital room and said “She’s right. The dress, it isn’t for Meredith” my heart burst.
5×22 is one of my favourite episodes and I adore the entire wedding scene, especially Alex’s speech.
8. Cristina operates at gun point
We already knew how strong Cristina Yang was, but this scene reinforced it even more. The Season 6 finale is still the most intense episode and finale to date.
9. Amelia breaks down
Caterina Scorsone’s acting in this scene is unbelievable. She puts everything into it and seeing Amelia’s vulnerability and emotion come pourring out is completely devastating to watch.
If you haven’t watched Private Practice, you should as you’ll learn a lot more about Amelia’s backstory and respect her character even more.
10. Jackson’s escapes death
April’s reaction when the bus exploded showed just how intense her love for Jackson is.
The thought of him dying completely shattered her, but when he walked out of the blaze a wave of relief washed over her and she realised that she didn’t want to live a life that didn’t involve him.
11. “Meant to be”
I will never, ever get over Lexie’s death.
She was such an innocent character and watching her die the way that she did was so painful. After she confessed her love to Mark a few episodes prior, he was finally able to say it back – but not under the circumstances any of us would have wanted.
The words “meant to be” will haunt me forever.
If you think I’m adding this scene to the list just because of the way Callie says “Arizona”, you’re absolutely right.
13. Addison’s arrival
When I watched this scene for the first time, I had no idea I would end up falling in love with Addison. Addison is undoubtedly one of the most loved and most missed Grey’s characters, and her first scene will always be iconic.
14. “Bad dreams bad dreams go away”
“Bad dreams bad dreams go away, good dreams good dreams here to stay.”
In retrospect, this is a pretty small scene from Grey’s Anatomy. But still, it’s incredibly moving.
15. “You think you can pray away the gay?”
In which Callie Torres continues to slay.
Seeing a child get unaccepted by their parent because of their sexuality would typically be tough to watch in any other show, but Grey’s handled it perfectly.
16. Samuel dies
“He squeezed my finger.. and then he let go.”
This scene and storyline still make me emotional every time I look back on it. Even though it’s an important story to tell and Sarah Drew and Jesse Williams put there all into it, I’ll never be able to forgive Grey’s for putting me through it.
Of course, there are hundreds of additional Grey’s Anatomy scenes that we’re all still thinking about, but these are 16 that I wanted to share.
